Global Game Jam Entry
Three sisters have been unemployed for quite some time due to the lack of demand for witches
in the economy. Upon hearing about the new role of the Weird Sisters in Shakespeare's
Macbeth, they eagerly scurry to casting auditions. To their dismay, another group of three
sisters were awaiting them, eyeing for the same role. Using mischievous spells and summoning
demonic helpers, the three sisters battle it out in a potionsmaking
competition to prove that they three witches are the superior witches.
You and your friends are witches brewing the ultimate potion. However, none of you are
powerful enough to do it on your own, so you must work together to gather ingredients to brew
your potion. However, beware of demons that are attracted to your occult creations!
The first trio of witches to complete 3 brews wins that game.
- 2 Game Boards
- 90 Ingredient Cards
- 20 Spell Cards
- 20 Demon Cards
- 30 Brew Cards
Divide the players into two teams of 3. Each player will select one of the witch positions to play.
For each team there are the “First Witch”, “Second Witch”, and “Third Witch” positions to choose
from. Give each team one of the two game boards to use. The First Witch sits on the right side
of the board, the Third Witch sits on the left side of the board, and the Second Witch sits in the
middle.
Deal each player 3 cards from the ingredients deck. Flip over 3 cards from the brew deck and
place them next to the brew deck face up. Flip over 3 cards from the ingredients deck and place
them next to the ingredients deck face up. Place a Demon on the start of each team’s demon
track.
The youngest Second Witch goes first.
Each turn proceeds in the following order:
- 1.  Build
- 2. Piles/Move Demons
- 3. Take a pile
- 4. Play spells/Add ingredients/Stir the cauldron
- 5. Add one card back to a pile
For each pile, place one card from the ingredients deck on top of it face up. If this adds the sixth
or higher card to any pile, put all cards in the pile into the ingredients discard. This occurs
whenever you add cards from players or from the deck.
When your first witch begins her turn, move your team’s demon token(s) one space forward on
the track.
Select one of the three ingredient piles to add to your hand. Take all the cards in the pile.
In order to play a spell, you must discard the spell card and your other two teammates must
each discard one of the corresponding ingredients. For example, if the First Witch wishes to
plays the “Mind Control” spell, which requires 2 “Rabbit’s Feet” to be discarded.
The First Witch must discard the spell card, the Second Witch must discard an “Rabbit’s Foot”,
and the Third Witch must discard an “Rabbit’s foot” because those are the ingredients on the
top left and right. It does not matter which witch discards which card as long. Once the cards are
discarded, immediately apply the effects of the spell.
Some spells can only be played when it is the other team’s turn:
You may place any number of ingredients into the cauldron on your turn. Each witch can only
place ingredients in certain areas of the cauldron as shown below.
The 1st Witch (who sits on the right) can access the right 3 squares (in this case, the yellow,
purple, and green squares). The 2nd Witch (who sits in the middle) can access the bottom 2 (in
this case the orange and the green squares). The 3rd Witch (who sits on the left) can access
the left 3 squares (in this case, the red, blue, and orange squares.
If the ingredients added complete a brew, immediately score the brew and end your turn.
Remove all ingredients from both cauldrons. The next round starts with the second witch on the
team that did not complete the brew.
Demons are created after a brew is completed. Place a demon marker at the start of each
team’s demon track. The witch’s on the team that completed the brew may move that demon
one space for each witch that did not take a turn that round. For example, if your team’s first
witch completes the brew, you may move the demon marker on your opponent’s board 2
spaces forward (one for second witch not taking their turn, and one for the the third witch) (see
below)
The second witch has the special ability to stir the cauldron, allowing the other witches to
access different areas of the cauldron. To stir it, rotate the cauldron any number of spaces. Do
this only once per turn, before or after placing ingredients. However, you may not place
ingredients, then stir, then place ingredients again.
There are 6 different ingredient types that brews are made up of, with each corresponding to a
different color:
- ● Eye of the Newt Purple
- ● Frog’s Tongue Green
- ● Mandrake Root Yellow
- ● Wolf’s Fang Red
- ● Rabbit’s Foot Orange
- ● Owl’s Feather Blue
Each brew card indicates how many of each ingredient type is required to complete it. Brews
still count as completed even if there are extra ingredients in the cauldron.
Whenever a brew is created, demons are attracted to the occult magic and a demon token
appears on the start of each team’s demon track. The team that completed the brew may
additionally move the demon token one space for each witch on their team that did not take a
turn that round. For example, if the first witch completes the brew, the second and third witches
may each move the demon one space; and if the third witch completes the brew, every witch
had a turn and it stays on the start space.
The demon moves one space along the demon track on the turn of that team’s First Witch. If the
demon reaches the end of the track, flip the top card of the Demon deck over and immediately
and apply its effects.
When a witch adds the final ingredient to the cauldron that is required for a brew, that brew is
immediately scored. The team that completed the brew takes the brew card and sets it aside. All
cards in each team’s cauldron are put into the discard pile. All cards in each player’s hand are
also placed in the discard pile. The next round starts with the losing team’s second witch.
Teams may not score more than one brew, even if they are completed simultaneously. The
scoring team chooses one brew to take and the other is discarded as if it wasn’t completed.
